FREE health assessments for seniors

Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association is holding free health assessments, screenings and wellness education for seniors in February.

This program is designed to help improve the health and well-being of seniors, age 60 and older, who reside in the Greater New Bedford area and is funded in part through a grant from Coastline Elderly Services Inc. and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

The program offers free monthly community clinics at various locations throughout the region. Community clinics include health screenings for blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen levels and blood sugar conducted by Southcoast VNA nurses. Community clinics will also feature an educational component to address medication monitoring, chronic disease management, nutrition and home safety.

Give a pint ~ get a pound!

During January 2012, you give us a pint of blood and we'll give you a pound of delicious Dunkin' Donuts® coffee!

Dunkin' Donuts is teaming up with the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital to encourage local residents to donate blood.

In January, anyone who donates blood at the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital or at any Southcoast Blood Bank site or blood drive will receive a certificate for a pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Coupons are redeemable at participating Dunkin' Donuts while supplies last.

Stop by the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital anytime Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays until 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or call 508-961-5320 to make an appointment.

Southcoast cancer program publishes annual report

Every year the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care publishes an annual report on Southcoast's overall oncology program.

The report outlines all of Southcoast's oncology programs, reviews and certifications over the past year and statistics about the frequency of cancer occurances in the region.

The latest edition of the annual report is now available as a free download on our website.

All Southcoast facilities are now 100 percent smoke and tobacco free.

All of us at Southcoast Health System thank you for helping to make our campuses and the neighborhoods that surround us among the healthiest places on the South Coast.

The goal of the program is to create a healing environment for patients and to take a leadership role in the community as the region's largest health care provider and employer.

The new policy prohibits smoking and the use of all tobacco products on all Southcoast properties and adjacent grounds, including all three Southcoast Hospitals sites — Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham. The new policy applies to all patients, visitors, employees and anyone providing or receiving services at a Southcoast facility.
