Southcoast among top 100 hospitals in U.S. for heart care
Southcoast Hospitals Group this week was named a recipient of America's 100 Best Hospitals for heart care by HealthGrades®, the nation's leading, independent source of physician information and hospital quality ratings.
HealthGrades also awarded Southcoast its Specialty Excellence Award for Overall Cardiac Services, Cardiac Surgery and Coronary Interventional Procedures. Southcoast also was ranked five-stars in multiple categories.
"Patients in the South Coast region who receive their cardiac care at a Southcoast hospital can rest assured they are receiving their care at one of the top heart hospitals in the U.S.," said Keith A. Hovan, President & CEO of Southcoast Health System and Southcoast Hospitals Group.
"The HealthGrades rankings are an outstanding achievement for our cardiac program and a testament to our physicians and health care providers who are saving lives every day. At the forefront of this ranking is our dedication to improving quality care and patient safety, which is represented by these awards of excellence and being among the top five percent for overall cardiac care in the U.S."
The release of the 14th Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study analyzes tens of millions of patients' outcomes — specifically, mortality and complication rates — at the nation's 5,000 hospitals.

Southcoast investment to fund health equity initiative

Marianne DeSouza, Chairperson of GNB Allies and Director of the New Bedford Health Department, unveils a check for $375,000 with Jim Rattray, Vice President of Marketing & Public Affairs for Southcoast Health System.

The Greater New Bedford Allies for Health and Wellness (GNB Allies) recently announced the Greater New Bedford Healthy Equity Initiative, a five-year, $375,000 project funded by Southcoast Hospitals Group to address health disparities in the Greater New Bedford area by increasing access to primary and preventive health care.
The project is funded through community linkage funds that are part of the hospital's new Southcoast Center for Cancer Care in Fairhaven.
"The Greater New Bedford Health Equity Initiative is a shining example of how Southcoast Hospitals' community benefits investment can make a real and lasting impact on the health of our communities," said Keith A. Hovan, President & CEO of Southcoast Health System and Southcoast Hospitals Group.
"We live in a region with numerous health problems and high rates of chronic disease. It is important that these issues, as well as the risk factors that often cause them, are addressed early and out in the community, where we can be most effective. This collaboration will go a long way toward that goal for some of those most vulnerable in our communities."
The purpose of the Health Equity Initiative is to partner with community-based organizations to help increase the capacity of community health workers who provide outreach to underserved populations in our communities. Health outreach workers in many local organizations are essential in helping local residents access health care and maintain good health.
The funds will also be used to raise awareness of community health workers through community training and education, and to collaborate with initiatives that mobilize the community in addressing the social determinants of health.
The Greater New Bedford Health Equity Initiative will address health disparities in the Greater New Bedford area, including Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Rochester and Wareham.
