Safe Shoveling

Winter is here — along with snow, ice and cold. Southcoast Hospitals' Occupational Health offers some tips to practice safe shoveling to reduce strain on the heart and avoid injury.

Give a pint ~ get a pound!

For the fifth consecutive year, Dunkin' Donuts® is teaming up with the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital to encourage local residents to donate blood.

In January 2008, anyone — including Southcoast employees — who donates blood at the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital or at any Southcoast Blood Bank site or blood drive will receive a certificate for a pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Coupons are redeemable at any Dunkin' Donuts shop. Southcoast employees also receive a day off when they donate three times within an 18-month period.

Stop by the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.;,or Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Appointments are requested, but not necessary, and can be made by calling 508-961-5320.

The Southcoast Health Van also holds blood drives several times each month.

Your generosity makes a difference

Each year, your gift and gifts from other community-minded donors add up to millions of essential dollars for Charlton, St. Luke's and Tobey — all invested in improvements that help our patients.

It's your gift that pays in part for all our medical advances, like:

  • Minimally invasive heart surgery — which doesn't require cracking open your chest to repair a broken heart.

  • Full digital mammography — which pushes effective detection even earlier, before cancer has spread, saving younger and younger women.

  • Nationally recognized gastric bypass surgery — which has medically obese patients back to work in a week and losing their high-risk pounds.

And those are just the tip of the iceberg. Just imagine the advances we could see next year with your continued faith and assistance.

Honestly, we can't do it without you. Keeping community hospitals like Charlton, St. Luke's and Tobey equal to the best in big-city health care is tough. It's so expensive. It requires heavy investment — and a substantial philanthropic commitment from you and others who depend on us for care.

Please — for you, and yours, and your community's hospitals — make a gift today.
