Southcoast honors Rev. Dr. Robert P. Lawrence

Southcoast Hospital Group issued a proclamation declaring August 8 to be Rev. Dr. Robert P. Lawrence Day at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

The proclamation was presented to Rev. Lawrence at the June 6 meeting of the Charlton Memorial Hospital President's Council.

"Rev. Lawrence has been a steadfast supporter of Charlton Memorial Hospital and an anchor of the Fall River community for more than five decades," said Ronald B. Goodspeed, MD, MPH, President of Southcoast Hospitals Group. "It is only fitting that we set aside August 8 — his birthday — to honor him."

The proclamation was read by Robert S. Karam, a Southcoast trustee and Chairman of the Charlton President's Council, who noted Rev. Lawrence's ministry of the First Congregational Church in Fall River and his inauguration of the Pastoral Care Department at Union and Truesdale Hospitals among his many accomplishments.

A New St. Luke's is ready for you

The New St. Luke's Hospital was officially dedicated on July 16.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., (pictured at right), along with state Sen. Mark C.W. Montigny, New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang and City Councilor Jane Gonsalves were on hand to praise the completion of the three-year, $33 million renovation project.

"The new ER will improve the hospital's ability to continue providing New Bedford and the surrounding communities with high-quality medical care," Rep. Frank said.

The project includes an expanded Emergency Department, more patient rooms, an additional cardiac catheterization laboratory and a new amphitheatre for medical education.

Drs. Chris Campos, Tom Carr and Richard Miller

"I'm Chris Campos. I'm a heart surgeon at Southcoast.

"The best part of this job is making a positive impact on people's lives. Spending time with patients and families is a part of surgical care that doesn't get a lot of attention, but I think that's one reason why our patients do so well here.

"The quality of heart surgery is as good as Boston or Providence. But the patient experience is better here."
