AHA! Give blood!

Enjoy a fun evening in downtown New Bedford — and give the gift of life at the same time.

The Southcoast Blood Bank will be holding a blood drive during AHA! Night in downtown New Bedford on Thursday, June 14, from 3 to 8 p.m.

The Southcoast Health Van will be located at Custom House Square to accept blood donations and to perform free health screenings.

New health plan for seniors

Southcoast Hospitals recently became a contracted provider with Senior Whole Health to deliver and coordinate care for low-income seniors.

Senior Whole Health is now accepted at all Southcoast locations.

Senior Whole Health is a new health care plan for people who are 65 years old or older who qualify for MassHealth and who live in the Senior Whole Health service area, which includes all of Massachusetts. People who are 65 or older who have both MassHealth and Medicare can also join Senior Whole Health.

Charlton family portrait unveiled

Southcoast Hospitals last week unveiled a portrait of the family of Earle P. "Chuck" Charlton II, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. The portrait includes Charlton, his wife, Fran, and daughter, Stacey.

"Chuck and his family have continued and expanded the legacy of giving that began with his grandfather, Earle Perry Charlton, more than eight decades ago," said John B. Day, President & CEO of Southcoast Health System. "We thought it was only fitting to honor that legacy with a portrait of this latest generation of the Charlton family."

The Charlton legacy of giving, whose health interests previously focused on Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, broadened in 2006 with a $2 million gift to St. Luke's Hospital, Southcoast's New Bedford site, to help fund the recently completed $33 million expansion and renovation project. The gift was the largest ever received by St. Luke's.
