Quality awarded

An initiative to help patients improve the management of oral medications has earned Southcoast Home Care recognition by the MassPRO Home Health Quality Initiative.

Patients often need assistance managing their medication, especially when they are released from a hospital. Southcoast Home Care seeks to reduce these problems by reviewing medications upon patient intake and by conducting ongoing reviews.

"When a patient begins receiving services through Southcoast Home Care, it is important for us to pay close attention to what medication they are taking and compare it to what the physician has prescribed," said Paula Shiner, Director of Southcoast Home Care. "We also need to check possible interactions with food or other drugs."

MassPRO's home health quality improvement program was created to improve quality of care and patient outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries receiving home health services.

Skin cancer screenings

Free skin cancer screenings will be held at The Oncology Center in North Dartmouth on Wednesday, September 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dermatologists who specialize in the treatment of skin disease and disorders, along with registered nurses, will conduct the screening and provide information on skin cancer prevention tips and area services for cancer patients.

Space is limited and pre-registration for the screening is required. Call 508-979-5858 ext. 1001.

Preparing for disaster

The havoc wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast states reminds us all of how devastating a natural disaster can be.

For the medical teams at Southcoast Hospitals who would respond to such a crisis in our region, annual training and crisis planning are the best preparation.

Earlier this year representatives from the Tobey Hospital Emergency Department were among the first in Massachusetts to attend a national disaster readiness program at the Noble Training Center (NTC) in Alabama.

"It's as close to the real thing as you can get," said Robert B. Quirk BA, RN, Nurse Manager of Emergency Services at Tobey. "From chemical exposures and infectious disease to violent crimes and hostage situations, the training is designed to provide health care professionals with the skills to manage the most devastating of circumstances."

It's our people.

Like Patricia Keenan, RN, an Emergency Department nurse with years of experience taking care of some of the area's most critical patients.

"Each nurse may take care of several patients at once, but no matter what their problems are, we care about each and every one of them," she said.
