Breast Health Glossary

Biopsy

This is a surgical sample of breast tissue that is then analyzed by a pathologist to determine if cells are cancerous or benign. There are a number of different ways to perform breast biopsies, some using needles to extract cells and other biopsies requiring minor surgery in the operating room. In almost all breast biopsies, mammograms are performed first to identify the exact area that needs to be biopsied. The area is often bisected with small needles during the radiology procedure to help the surgeon pinpoint the biopsy later during surgery.

Diagnostic Mammogram

If a potential problem is suspected with a screening mammogram then more extensive mammography is performed to give radiologists more detailed views of any problem areas in the breast.

Mammographer

These are radiologic technologists who have specialized training and certification in mammography. Southcoast mammographers are highly experienced, performing over 50,000 mammographies annually at all of our various sites.

Radiologist

A physcian who specializes in reading and analyzing mammography, ultrasound and many other forms of diagnostic imaging. Because of the high volume of mammography and other forms of breast imaging at Southcoast, our radiologists have extensive expertise in this field.

Screening Mammogram

A mammogram that is an initial screening test to detect any potential breast cancer problems. The American Cancer Society recommends a baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40; bi-annual screening mammograms between 40 and 50, and annual screening mammograms over the age of 50.

Stereotactic Biopsy

A special kind of biopsy in which breast cell samples are extracted through a hollow needle. Coumputerized radiology equipment helps the radiologist pinpoint the exact area that needs to be biopsied.

Ultrasound

A tool that uses sound waves to create images. Ultrasound helps determine whether a potential breast tumor might be a fluid-filled cyst, usually harmless, or a solid mass that may require a biopsy.
